What is Halloumi?

Halloumi is a semi-hard, unripened brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk (sometimes with cow's milk added) and flavoured with dried mint. Its most distinctive property is a high melting point that allows it to be grilled, fried or barbecued without losing its shape — making it uniquely versatile.

Originating in Cyprus, halloumi has been granted EU PDO status since 2021, meaning only cheese made in Cyprus can carry the name. Its squeaky texture, savoury flavour and browning characteristics have made it one of the fastest-growing cheese categories globally.

Halloumi has been one of the most dynamic growth stories in the European dairy category. UK retail sales have grown by double digits year-on-year for the past decade. In Germany, the Netherlands and the UAE, demand for premium grilling cheese is accelerating as BBQ culture and vegetarian/flexitarian diets converge.

Foodservice operators — from hotel breakfast buffets to fast-casual chains — are also adding halloumi as a permanent menu item. Our foodservice-format 500 g packs are sized precisely for professional kitchen use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does halloumi come from?+
Halloumi is a traditional cheese from Cyprus, made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, sometimes with added cow's milk. It is now Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) as a Cypriot product since 2021.
Why is halloumi growing so fast in the UK?+
Halloumi's unique ability to hold its shape when grilled or fried, combined with growing vegetarian and flexitarian trends, has made it one of the fastest-growing cheese categories in the UK. Retailers and foodservice operators are significantly expanding their halloumi range.
What formats of halloumi are available?+
We offer Classic Halloumi (200g, 250g, 500g), Light Halloumi (200g, 250g) and Herb Halloumi with mint, oregano or chilli (200g). All are vacuum packed for a long shelf life. Private label is available across the full range.
Is halloumi suitable for vegetarians?+
Our halloumi is suitable for lacto-vegetarians. It does not contain meat-derived rennet. All products are clearly labelled to confirm vegetarian suitability — an important point for UK and German retail.
